Tourism Research Australia chief economist Leo Ago said the annual increase of five percent in the number of foreign tourists has demonstrated the high Australian dollar was not an obstacle.

"These results are a clear indication of the continued growth of the Asian market, and the continued recovery of some traditional markets," he said in a statement.

Half of foreign tourists came to New South Wales,tourism research australia followed by Queensland with 35%.

Approximately 50% of visitors came from a holiday, visiting family room, while 16% are traveling for business.
